Thy Kingdom Come! May 2018

As we have done over the past 2 years, in May we are participating in the Archbishops’ global prayer event, ‘Thy Kingdom Come’. The idea is in the 10 day period between Ascension (Thursday 10th May) and Pentecost (Sunday 20th May) to get Christians around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus Christ.

This year the event coincides with Christian Aid Week (13-19 May) so we will be making available a prayer booklet that allows folk to pray for God’s Kingdom to come through the ministry of Christian Aid.

We also have available some copies of a free prayer journal, and a prayer Novena booklet (a novena is a series of specific prayers prayed over 9 days with a certain request or intention in mind). and for families there is a ‘Bright Prayer ideas for families at home’ sheet which is supplemented by an activity kit which can be ordered for £7.50 from

In addition church leaders across Harrogate have agreed that the time of the ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ initiative is the perfect time to pray for our town of Harrogate – #prayerforharrogate. The aim is to deliver to every home a card telling the residents that they have been prayed for and offering them the opportunity to receive specific prayer by returning the card – see

Therefore, we will be asking the Christian Aid collectors to be delivering these cards at the same time as they post the Christian Aid envelopes through people’s doors – a sort of BOGOF (buy one get one free!) – as well as hopefully involving more people in the delivery of the prayer cards (more details to follow).

How will we be taking part

  • Prayer Stations in St John’s throughout the period
  • Morning Prayer: Mon 14th to Thurs 17th 9am at St John’s except Tues 15th when it will be at St Luke’s
  • Evening Prayer:
    • 15pm Monday 14th St John’s
    • 15 pm Tuesday St Luke’s
    • 4pm Wednesday 16th St John’s – family friendly
  • Prayer Walking of the parish, Sunday 13th May at 6pm, starting with Worship in the East End Room
  • Half night of prayer, 8pm to midnight, Friday 18th May at St John’s
  • Delivering prayer cards to homes in the parish (in conjunction with Christian Aid week)
  • We will be going into schools sharing about the Lord’s Prayer

Most importantly of all, we are asking people to commit to pray for 5 people – friends or family – to come to faith. There will be wristbands to remind us to pray.

For those who wish to attend, there is also a diocesan Thy Kingdom Come service on Sunday 13th May at Bradford Cathedral, 3 – 6pm. Worship will be led by a variety of musicians including the Voices in Praise Gospel Choir & Christian musician, Joe King and band. Bishop Nick will speak, and there will be prayer spaces and creative ways of engaging with the priorities of Thy Kingdom Come. There will be information stalls from a variety of organisations with refreshments. NB the exact programme is to be confirmed. Book via

Also there is a great new Thy Kingdom Come song – see

Please join in in whatever way is appropriate, praying for God’s Kingdom to come.
