Look Behind You!

As the autumn nights start drawing in, St John’s and St Luke’s Churches are seeking to banish those post-summer blues by embarking on an ambitious new venture: a full production – all singing and dancing! – of the pantomime “Cinderella”.

The idea is the brainchild of singing teacher and St John’s member, Ruth Yarborough. Ruth feels that, whilst the churches have been strong in organising social and fun events for children in the parish, there hasn’t been much in recent years for the adults to get their teeth into and staging something like a pantomime would be a good way for people to get to know each other better and have fun.

The project is still in the early planning stages, though the idea is for auditions, rehearsals and backstage preparations to run throughout the autumn, with two or maybe three performances taking place at St John’s after Christmas, probably in early February. Ian Thomson-Smith has already produced an excellent, highly entertaining script with plenty of jokes, songs and the usual pantomime fun, ably abetted by local Gilbert & Sullivan star and St John’s choir member Terry Harrison and local musician Pam Else who is in charge of the live musical accompaniment.

By the time you read this article most of the cast should already have been chosen, but there should still be some parts up for grabs for any budding thespians, singers or dancers, as well as plenty of opportunities for anyone interested to be involved backstage with costume production, makeup, set building, refreshments and publicity. If you think you might like to help in this way, then please contact either Ruth, who is in overall charge of the production, or Helen, who is responsible for publicity and ticketing, on the details below.

If the smell of the crowd and roar of the greasepaint is not for you then we hope you will still bring your family to come and see the show. Whilst the show is being produced and performed by adults it is, of course, aimed at an all-age audience, with much to entertain children and adults alike.

Details of performance dates, ticket prices etc are still to be settled, so watch this space for further information in next month’s Focus magazine. In the meantime start exercising your cheering, singing and booing muscles and prepare to see your St John’s and St Luke’s friends as you’ve never seen them before!
